“There are many wonders about Idrija, Slovenia, that I find completely fascinating. I am Australian, and I have recently moved to Idrija. From my perspective as someone new to the area, I’ve noticed things that are deeply cherished by locals, details that even outsiders might easily overlook and I think these are worth sharing for anyone fascinated by Slovenia.
I remember my first time ever coming here I was driving to my fiances hometown, Idrija. It was one of the most scenic drives I have ever experienced, and to this day, I feel the same way. The mountains were tall, with pine trees covered in snow that sparkled like crystals under a clear blue sky it was breathtaking. Idrija has clusters of compact villages surrounded by farms and forests. Almost every household has fruit trees growing in their gardens or growing wild , something I rarely saw in Australia.
What really stands out to me is the local love and respect for nature. Many people in Idrija are beekeepers, and their traditional painted beehive panels are beautiful examples of Slovenian folk art. It’s inspiring to see how people continue to live in harmony with nature, nurturing the land rather than exploiting it. Pastures are often unfenced, with cows and sheep roaming freely across the mountain meadows.
Another tradition that amazed me is the linden tree , Slovenia’s national symbol. It represents community, peace, and gathering. Locals make linden flower tea, which is soothing for colds and digestion, and the tree itself serves as a place for socialising and festivals. I love how the community comes together to join in on events, there is always something special happening to bring everyone together. Seeing how much value they place on this tradition made me appreciate how deeply Slovenian culture is connected to nature and community.
My experience in Idrija so far has been a true adventure. It is a place filled with happiness, community, and joy. Here, I feel connected to both nature and the people, and I feel like I am truly part of a community I look forward to exploring Idrija more and discovering more of its hidden gems.
